Get Your Garden Ready For Winter
The temperatures are (finally!) dropping, the birds are flying south, and it's time to get your garden ready for winter. Here's our guide to putting the garden to bed for the season.
Lawn Maintenance
Rake leaves as they fall to keep on top of the mess, or hire a leaf blower to tackle the pile. Consider using the gathered leaves to make leaf mould for future planting.
Cut your grass well before winter takes hold! Your lawn needs a really good cut before the cold sets in; let it get too long and it'll be impossible to cut over the winter. If you don't have one to hand, you can hire a range of lawn mowers from Greenplant.
Scarify your lawn to allow the ground to breathe. Hire a motorised scarifier to get the job done faster.
Garden Beds and Borders
Give your hedges a final trim before the first frost. A hedge trimmer makes quick work of tidying your borders for the upcoming winter. For very tall hedges, use a long reach hedge trimmer.
Uproot dead annuals and weeds that have grown out of control over the summer.
Plant spring bulbs and evergreens. Evergreens offer relief from the grey of winter, and spring bulbs provide that first injection of colour in spring.
Spread compost or wood chips so that worms have all winter to work it in ready for spring planting.
Other Garden Infrastructure
Pressure wash areas like patios and paths to prevent grime from building over the winter and surfaces becoming slippery. We have a range of pressure washers available for hire.
Net ponds. If you're lucky enough to have a pond, now is the time to net it to ensure it doesn't fill with soggy leaves as they drop!
